Dear Parents/Guardians and Scholars,
Haas Hall Academy Rogers will conduct hearing and vision screenings, scoliosis screenings, and BMI screenings starting March 1st.
Hearing and Vision:
8th grade scholars and all scholars that are new to HHA this school year.
Vision: This screening will involve scholars reading letters on a vision chart and looking at other screening test images. Scholars, if you have glasses or contacts, please make sure you are wearing or bringing them to school.
Hearing: This screening will require scholars to listen to soft beeping sounds.
Scoliosis:
8th grade scholars only.
The purpose of the screening program is to detect possible curvature of the spine in children. If the condition is detected early and appropriately treated, progressive spinal deformity may be prevented.
The screening test is very simple and can be performed in less than a minute. The Academy Nurse is a trained screener and will check your child’s back by observing it while your child is standing and bending forward. You will be contacted if there is any reason to have your child examined by your pediatrician, family physician, or orthopedist.
To assure a view of the spine, we will request that students expose their backs during screening. It is recommended that boys wear a shirt that can be easily removed. Girls should wear a bra, bathing suit top, or halter-top under a blouse or sweater. Your cooperation is essential to help us make the program run smoothly.
Body Mass Index (BMI):
8th grade and 10th grade scholars.
Height, weight, age, and gender are used to calculate BMI to indicate if a scholar may be underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.
The data from these screenings is mandated by the state and kept confidential. You will be notified if your scholar does not pass one or more of the screenings. If you have any objections to having your child participate in the screening program, please inform the school nurse via email by Wednesday, March 1st.
Thank you,
Ashley Sanders, BSN, RN
