Vision & Hearing Screenings

Arkansas State Act 1438 requires schools to provide auditory and visual screenings of children in Arkansas schools. Hearing and vision screenings for Haas Hall Academy scholars occur in 8th grade or for any scholar who transferred in for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Screenings this year will begin on Monday, October 21st.

Vision screening is done using a Snellen eye chart and the Titmus Vision Screener which evaluates for six major issues, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and lateral and vertical muscle balance. Scholars who wear corrective lenses are screened with the lenses on, and each eye is tested separately. Scholars who do not pass the hearing test are re-screened at a later date. Parents are informed if their child does not pass the second screening.

Hearing screening is done using equipment providing tonal stimuli at 1000, 2000, and 4000 hertz (Hz) at hearing level of 20 decibels (dB). Scholars who do not pass the hearing test are re-screened at a later date. Parents are notified if their child does not pass the second screening.

Evaluation by an eye care or hearing specialist is recommended for scholars who do not pass their vision or hearing screenings. If you have any questions regarding the results of your child’s screening, please contact Nurse Laura at laurahardy@haashall.org.
